Day 3 – after the amazing day at Kualoa Ranch, we didnt know what adventure would top that next! At 8am we hit the famous Ross store and it didnt disappoint! Shopping yay! If you go to Hawaii you need to check out Ross! Dont be scared guys, you’ll too find something. There’s so much clothing, shoes, handbags, gym wear, homewares, for men, kids and women – it was like a Target on steroids but cheaper. I was in awe of the place and I did say to myself I’m not going to buy everything all in the one day because I know I will be back to Ross throughout this trip and also I felt I couldn’t drag Trent around all morning when they were so many more amazing things to discover in Waikiki. So we bought a few things and left.
We went back to our Airbnb and decided to call an Uber to take us to Diamond Head it was 12 p.m, hot outside and the sunscreen was on thick! We were told to do the hike in the early morning or late afternoon due to the heat but as you’ll notice in this blog – we kind of disregarded that rule on all our hikes lol.
A 20 minute drive with our lovely uber driver, we arrived at Diamond Head and it was an amazing easy walk for us. I guess it depends on everyone’s capabilities of how quickly you can do the walk, the temperature was fine for us Aussies and your time may also depend on how many people are on the trail. At 12pm – let’s say it was pretty quiet. We reached the top within 25 minutes, the view from the top was amazing! Waikiki looked so beautiful from up there and as daring as we are, we needed to get some great photos because we knew we were only going to be at Diamond Head once this trip. So typical us style, we climbed over the safety fence, walked across a tiny goat trail, climbed up the bunker and found ourselves situated on one of the highest most breath taking points of Diamond Head overlooking Waikiki. I am not recommending you do this at all this was a huge safety risk but photos speak for themselves. It was an amazing moment that I won’t ever forget, even though we were getting death stares from a few people who were behaving behind the safety fence, it was worth it.
After the hike we took an Uber to the famous Leonard’s Bakery for malasadas. malsadas? however you say it! Ha! This was something in Hawaii that we could never say correctly the first time, but that doesn’t matter because they tasted yummy! They’re like warm little fluffy doughnuts covered in cinnamon sugar with or without flavors on the inside, like custard or chocolate. To me they tasted great but not something I would buy again in a hurry. Trent on the other hand thought it was heaven in his mouth.
After that sugar hit we walked 20 minutes down the road and found the famous Rainbow Drive-in. This was where I had heard they made the best Hawaiian Loco moco. Again another meal that did not disappoint, full of rich mushroom gravy, meat patties, boiled rice and poached eggs. These meals in America are huge and even though we have done a lot of walking today we could not finish it all. The other thing that’s huge in America is the amount of homeless people struggling to find food and shelter. To me this was a big eye opener as I did not think that there would be so much of this in Hawaii. It saddens me as it is not just men but women living homeless on the streets, hungry and many with mental health issues. I said to Trent that I’d love to give our meals to someone who was in need of it . We didnt want to throw away food so within 5 minutes we found a homeless man who was living out of a shopping cart and offered him our lunch. He was over the moon, very blessed and couldn’t say thank you enough! This warmed my soul and this is also something that I will remember forever, the smile in his eyes said enough and filled my heart.
So something to think about for those who are travelling to Hawaii, be prepared to see a lot of homeless and mentally ill men and women who have lost their way in this beautiful place and who are happy to receive any sort of food or donation. A small act of kindness may be a big impact to someone’s life.
